ASU IMMIGRATION POLICY

The International Programs Office currently handles most of the immigration status applications needed to insure non-citizens are legally eligible to work at ASU. The exception is student visas and practical training extensions to student visas. ASU will apply for immigration statuses that authorize university employment as noted below:

  1. Application for H1B immigration status may be requested only for individuals accepting regular (i.e. 6 month or longer) faculty or academic professional appointments hired through either an open competitive search or through a waiver of recruitment.
  2. H-1B status may be requested for post doctoral research associate positions for no more than a three-year period, and will not be extended. ASU will not apply for permanent resident status for individuals in postdoctoral research associate positions.
  3. J1 immigration status may be requested for: a) faculty or academic professionals hired through an open, competitive search or through a waiver of recruitment, and b) exchange visitors coming to the university to conduct research or be affiliated with ASU but who will not be ASU employees.
  4. ASU will not apply for H1B or J1 immigration status for individuals hired for classified, administrative or service professional positions.
